By 2007, the inhabitants of the tiny Serbian village of Zitiste had had enough of centuries of floods, war, and famine. They needed someone who could reverse their bad luck and dismal history. Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Mother Teresa, and the Dalai Lama were already taken. But then a villager had a revelation: Rocky Balboa! The villagers decided to erect a sculpture that would make Zitiste famous, attract tourists, and improve their fortunes. They found a Croatian artist to recreate the famous Rocky sculpture. Then one of Eastern Europe's largest industries-whose trademark rooster just happens to strike the same pose as the celluloid pugilist-agreed to foot the bill. Not only in Amerika! Barry Avrich deftly, compassionately, and wittily weaves interviews with the villagers, Sylvester Stallone, and the sculptor to reveal the dreams of one small part of our global village.
