Smokers say it's relaxing, but its harvesters call it "the back-breaking leaf." A graphic look at the tobacco harvest in southwestern Ontario.
I'm not sure I'd be curating documentaries if it wasn't for the National Film Board of Canada. More specifically, I became hooked on docs while a student at Concordia University in Montreal. At the time, the NFB's Montreal location had just launched its CineRobotheque featuring a gigantic robotic arm that would snatch selected titles and insert them into your laser disc player. Looking back at notes from my Robotheque sessions, I've selected three of my fave shorts. The common subject thread here is labour, but really, I was most attracted to the poetry in these works. I haven't seen any of these films since my school days, but each remains quite vivid in my mind's eye. It wasn't so hip to be into docs in film school. While many of my colleagues were freaking on the Coen brothers or Tarantino, I was getting hooked on classic vérité and social issue docs. And here I am, a hot docster. Sean Farnel.
