Black Badge
Dir(s): Jung-min Choi
Program: Made In...
Run Time: 38 | South Korea | Language: (Subtitled in English) Korean
A masked man occupies a traffic control tower, high above the GM/Daewoo auto plant. Hyunsang Park, one of 35 contract workers fired for establishing a union, is determined to occupy the tower for as long as it takes to reinstate the lost jobs. He may be waiting a while; no one pays him much attention. Equally invisible on the factory floor, Korean contract employees earn 50% less than regular workers performing the same tasks. Required to wear black badges, contract workers are singled out for discrimination in the workplace. Drawing apt comparisons with Michael Moore's Roger & Me, Black Badge makes clear that those denied access to power resort to increasingly drastic measures to be seen and heard. Day after day Park struggles against boredom, futility, injustice, and pain from constant crouching atop his lonely perch 80 feet up. After all, demonstration without spectacle doesn't attract the world's attention. Angie Driscoll.
Co-presented with Toronto Reel Asian International Film Festival.
