A winner of Russia's most prestigious award for poetry and the author of more than 1,000 poems, Boris Ryzhy was talented, handsome, and famous. Born to an intellectual family in the industrial city of Yekaterinenburg, he was a hooligan and boxing champion in his teens, comfortable with the generation of criminals and bodyguards he grew up with. So why did he take his own life at 26? Aliona van der Horst's quest to answer this question sees her visiting the rough streets of Yekaterinenburg-where crime flourished after the fall of Communism-as well as Ryzhy's sister, wife, and son. Ryzhy's recordings of his poems, which convey a harsh reality with incredible tenderness, act as a kind of tour guide to his life and his psyche. What emerges is a penetrating portrait of the perestroika generation, as well as an affectionate, melancholy, and soulful portrait of a complex life.
