The Experimental Eskimos
Dir(s): Barry Greenwald
Program: Canadian Spectrum
Run Time: 70 | Canada | Language: English
In the 1960s, three 12-year-old Inuit boys were taken from their families in the Canadian Arctic and sent to live with foster families in Ottawa. Unaware that they were part of a dubious social experiment initiated by the Canadian government, they were forced to abandon their culture for the opportunity and education of the white man's world. Years later, the experiment was regarded a success when all three men went on to become great leaders who were instrumental in the establishment of Aboriginal rights and the creation of the territory of Nunavut. But it all came at an unfathomable personal price. Filmmaker Barry Greenwald reunites Peter Ittinuar, Zebedee Nungak, and Eric Tagoona to reflect upon the profound impact the experiment had on their lives and identities as Inuit people. The men candidly recount their stories in this bold and thought-provoking film about assimilation, empowerment, and the triumph of the human spirit. Michelle Latimer.
