The ivory-billed woodpecker has long been considered the Holy Grail by diehard birders who refused to believe it went extinct more than 60 years ago. When a kayaker encounters a strange woodpecker in the bayous of Eastern Arkansas, the government is quick to announce the ivory-bill has been rediscovered. Debate erupts between skeptics and believers, ornithologists and birders, realists and idealists. In this world gone mad, yokels with video cameras hold more sway than experts, blind faith trumps common sense, and myth takes precedence over truth. Several years and millions of dollars later, proof that the ivory-billed woodpecker still exists remains to be seen. Ghost Bird uses the woodpecker's questionable rediscovery as a springboard to expose our uneasy relationship with nature, our pathetic attempts at conservation, and the current social climate in the US. The film searches for a bird and instead finds a zeitgeist, a time of disillusionment and economic ruin, ivory-bill haircuts and burgers. Angie Driscoll.
