Grandmother’s Flower
Dir(s): Jeong-hyun Mun
Program: Made In...
Run Time: 89 | South Korea | Language: (Subtitled in English) Korean
Winner of the Best Documentary Award at the Pusan International Film Festival, Mun Jeong-Hyun's Grandmother's Flower is a moving exploration of South Korea's tumultuous and violent political past, as told through the experiences of Mun's extended family. Mun's grandfather, who hailed from a village scarred by divisions between left- and right-wing factions dating back to feudal times, barely survived the torture he endured for siding with the Communist north during the Korean War. Mun's grandmother, meanwhile, harbours a haunting secret about the death of her brother, who was indiscriminately shot by police while giving himself up. The more Mun digs into the dirty details of the past, the more he unearths festering tensions that still exist between seemingly peaceful neighbours in his sleepy little village - and the closer he gets to discovering unexpected branches in his own family tree. A provocative portrait of the impact of political divisions on one's self-conception.
Co-presented with Toronto Reel Asian International Film Festival.
