History of Manawan Part Two

Dir(s): Alanis Obomsawin

Program: Outstanding Achievement

Run Time: 19 | Canada  | Language:

Rarely seen, this fascinating historical vignette of an Atikamekw community in Quebec was one of Obomsawin's groundbreaking first works. An early multimedia piece made for education, it exemplifies the deep listening that would define her philosophical and aesthetic method. Elder Cézar Néwashish retells subtle yet radically revealing stories from long ago in the Atikamekw language. Obomsawin's English voice-over delicately captures the rhythms of these potent cultural and political fragments, revealing to us our true shared history. Gisèle Gordon.
