Wind is at home in China when he discovers he belongs in Norway. Wind (a.k.a. Øyvind Aamot) has forgotten the first 27 years of his life while searching for the horse nomads in the mountains of Northern China. His ability to navigate multilingual landscapes remains intact yet the purpose of his passport, his beloved guitar, and his mother escapes his grasp; he retains no memories of their common bonds. He is uncertain where he belongs as he relearns the ways of the world through his loved ones. Hunting Down Memory brings to light questions of identity, cultural assumptions, and national borders. After six years, Wind decides to retrace his footsteps with filmmaker Thomas Lien and to question the Chinese villagers who may know the answer to the mystery of what triggered his memory loss.
