Presidio Modelo

Program: Canadian Spectrum
Run Time: 15 | Canada | Language: (Subtitled in English) Spanish
"He said these walls had buried him alive, that they had buried his soul."
In 1926, Cuban president Gerardo Machado builds a prison that will revolutionize society. Inspired by philosopher Jeremy Bentham's Panopticon design, Machado constructs a circular building where cells become theatres illuminating the incarcerated. Forever etched into Cuban history, this is the place where Castro would write the beginnings of his communist manifesto. This lyrically mesmerizing and fearlessly intelligent film reveals the haunting brutality of incarceration. Michelle Latimer.
