Prom Night in Mississippi
Dir(s): Paul Saltzman
Program: World Showcase
Run Time: 90 | Canada | Language: English
"They have separate proms and they have separate Homecoming Queens, one white and one black. I said, 'how stupid can that be'." - Morgan Freeman
Going to classes together is one thing. Dancing together is quite another. It took 16 years for Morgan Freeman's hometown to allow black students into its whites-only high school after desegregation. That was 1970. The Academy Award-winning actor offered to foot the bill for the school's first racially integrated senior prom in 1997. It was finally accepted in 2008. As girls try on ball gowns and get the latest sophisto hairdos, guys preen in their first tuxedos, book limos, and arrange dates. Paul Saltzman intercuts this lively footage with interviews of students, teachers, and parents to reveal the everyday prejudices and tensions underlying the excitement. But as the pure joy, hot music, and radiant glamour of this prom clearly show, race relations in Charleston, Mississippi will never be the same again. Lynne Fernie.
