Peter Greenaway is one of the most innovative artists of our time. In his latest documentary, the acclaimed director, writer, and visual artist takes up the role of champion of visual literacy by conducting a forensic search of Rembrandt's "The Night Watch." In the film's opening shot at the stunning Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, Greenaway contextualizes Rembrandt's creation in the 17th century. As the painting fills the screen, Greenaway launches the investigation of the painting's 34 characters in their collective conspiracy to kill. There's never a dull moment. The camera acts as a magnifying glass, scrutinizing the painting's most subtle details as the plot unfolds. With a vibrant script and no shortage of humour and charm, Greenaway is a naturally entertaining narrator. He also enlists the cast of his 2007 film, Nightwatching, whose dramatized interrogations provide a third dimension to complete the picture. This exquisitely executed art experiment is a triumphant rendering of art appreciation. Karina Rotenstein.
