Sacred Places
Dir(s): Jean-Marie Teno
Program: Next
Run Time: 70 | Cameroon
France | Language: French
Thoughtful and reflective, probing and provocative, Sacred Places sees award-winning Cameroonian filmmaker Jean-Marie Teno examining Africa's struggle for a cohesive post-colonial identity through the role that contemporary films play in African communities. Shooting during the biannual FESPACO African film festival in Ouagadougou, the capital of Burkina Faso, Teno focuses on the experiences of Bouba, a self-professed film geek who runs the local Cine Club, and Jules Cesar, a djembe maker and player who literally drums up business for the local theatre. Cesar applies himself to a traditional grassroots art, while Bouba runs a business that is highly dependent on an international industry that makes African films less accessible to Africans. Sacred Places addresses such key issues as national identity in the context of globalization and the relationship between cultural identity and economics, and does so with a gentle, warm approach and an affectionate eye to the vibrancy and camaraderie of the community.
Co-presented with Toronto African Film and Music Festival.
