Tyson
Dir(s): James Toback
Program: Special Presentations
Run Time: 90 | | Language:
Barely removed from the string of lurid headlines that marked his final years as a celebrity boxer, it's easy to forget that, in his prime, Mike Tyson was among the dominant athletes of his era. That's one of the things that James Toback's doc on Tyson reminds us of: that he was a feared and ferocious opponent. The other is how little we question the basis for our understanding of popular figures, how uncomplicated people become when they're tabloid fodder. Toback, a friend of Tyson, returns some of the complexity and dignity to our perception of Mike Tyson. Yet this isn't hagiography. Essentially a lengthy interview with Tyson, interspersed with riveting footage from his fight career, Toback prompts Iron Mike on all aspects of his personal and professional life. In turn, Tyson is raw, candid, introspective and, yes, thoughtful. An engaging look at a complicated life. Sean Farnel.
