With Drums and Trumpets
Dir(s): Marcel Carrière
Program: Spotlight On...
Run Time: 27 | Canada | Language: (Subtitled in English) French
In 1867, when Pope Pius IX called for volunteers to defend against the troops of King Victor-Emmanuel, Quebec sent 503 men. A humorous but sympathetic look at this elite group filmed at the event's centenary celebration.
Ever since the NFB launched its website, I've been spending delicious evenings curled up with my better half exploring its superb collection. The site provides invaluable access to some of our cinema's greatest classics-to be discovered or rediscovered-as well as to some lesser known but still fascinating films from our history. One of these classics is Marcel Carrière's With Drums and Trumpets, a 1968 film about the Papal Zouaves, the volunteer Vatican army, in its final days of glory. Carrière's take on the Zouaves is not without irony, and the humour of the situation prevails as we watch the battalion stage its strange and wonderful rituals. Shot at the height of the Quiet Revolution, With Drums and Trumpets also marked the end of an era in Quebec-that of the reign of the clerics. Marie-Anne Raulet.
